“God is good all the time; all the time, God is good!” This is a phrase every Christian is familiar with. It is a truth we have been taught since Sunday School. It’s a line we say out loud during church service, and it’s probably advice you’ve given to a friend who is going through a rough time. Sometimes though, when things start to get confusing or difficult, we may find ourselves turning that phrase into a question instead. Is God good? Is He really good, all the time?
This is a question worth asking, and something we’ve all thought at some point, especially during dark seasons. You can know the answer to these questions in these beautiful verses about God’s goodness.
It Is Who He Is
The nature of God is good; He is incapable of anything else. What does this mean? This means that everything He creates is good, too. Everything. That includes us, His children. It also means that surely everything He does in our life can only mean it is good or is for our own good.
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”
1 John 1:5
“This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.”
1 John 4:8
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.’”
Even When We Don’t Understand
I wish I could say that it would all make sense all the time. But the truth is, God doesn’t work that way, and neither does faith. His thoughts are so much loftier than ours, and it’s not something we are built to comprehend. That’s where faith comes in; faith that you serve a God who keeps His word, who only has the most beautiful future for you, and who has a picture so big and so wide that it would be impossible for us to understand, but we will all one day behold.
“’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”
“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.’”
“How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.”
It Is A Promise We Can Trust
Because God’s nature is good, we can be sure that when God says His plans for us are good, He will keep His promise. No matter what our situation is, it will all work out in the end, if we abide in Him, love Him, and trust Him. He will always make it work for our good, even if it is not what we thought it would be. Just like the song says, “When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.”
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
“…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
God is good all the time. All the time, God Is good. This is the truth, and it will never change, even if the world falls away. You can hold on to that.
