“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”- Psalm 61:2
Background from Psalm 61
The whole book of Psalms is a collection of songs of David. Whether he was rejoicing or in pain, David worshipped and prayed and cried out to God through songs and hymns. Psalm 61, in particular, was written when he was in deep despair, far from home, stuck in darkness, not knowing if light will ever shine upon him again.
And so once again David found himself crying out – “…when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” He didn’t let his situation stop him from crying out to the Lord and trusting that He was listening.
What did David mean in Psalm 61:2?
There’s no question that for more than a year, a lot of us have found ourselves in our own caves, trapped in our homes while we wait for this pandemic to end. The whole world seemed to be crying out in pain, and despair could be found in every corner. People were losing jobs, relationships were falling apart, economies crumbling under the weight of lockdowns. And maybe, just like David, we found ourselves crying out too – “when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I!” We probably had many nights when we didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, or if there was even going to be a tomorrow!
But this verse reminds us that even in our darkest times and most troubling situations, we can cry out to God. When our hearts are filled with overwhelming anxiety, when sleep is stolen from us because of our never-ending thoughts, when hope seems fraught and out of reach, we can always cry out to God. We can believe that He is the rock that is higher than all of problems. Our mighty God is solid, strong, and permanent. When we cry out, He will always be there to listen, and to pull us out of the miry clay. With Jesus, our feet will always be standing on solid ground.
“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to a rock that is higher than I”
Even when you don’t understand what’s happening around you and the purpose doesn’t seem clear, don’t hesitate to ask God to take you out of your troubles. Never think that your problems are too big or too small for God’s attention – because He cares about every single second of your life and every breath you take. Surround yourself with this promise that never runs dry – that He can, and will, lead you to a rock that is higher.
God knows that sometimes, and maybe many times, we will be overwhelmed. Our hearts might feel like it’s going to burst from the stress of the day to day. And this is why God wants you to know, that just like David, you can cry out to the Lord and lay your burdens upon Him. You might just find that your anxious heart will be lighter, that your load won’t feel so heavy anymore, after crying out. Fill your home with this reminder, put it on your phone case, surround your loved ones with this promise. So go ahead, dear friend, and remember that when your heart is overwhelmed, there is always hope in Jesus.
