Maybe you’ve seen it around, this symbol that looks like a computer code: G>∧∨.
It’s on shirts, hats, prints, maybe even tattoos! Everyone seems to know what it means, and maybe to you, it seems like something only a hacker can understand! But however cryptic it may seem, the message is actually simple and truer than true: God is greater than the highs and lows.
Such a simple symbol, and yet it carries such a big and heavy truth: we serve a boundless, omnipresent, omniscient God, bigger than the universe itself.
The reason you’re seeing it everywhere is that it is a promise that extends beyond time and space, dimensions, and reality itself.
No matter what season in our lives we may find ourselves in, this will remain true – that God is greater than the highs and lows. No matter how big your mountains may seem, God is bigger still. No matter how numerous the enemy’s arrows may be aimed your way – this symbol is greater.
A truth, a promise you can rely on, that God is greater than the highs and lows. You’re seeing it everywhere because it is something that God has given us to hold on to during the darkest times in our lives.
What a beautiful truth it is to know that our God is greater than the highs and lows! And this symbol is a great reminder of the kind of God we serve.
What is the Origin of the Phrase “God is Greater than the Highs and Lows”
The phrase “God is greater than the highs and lows” doesn’t come from one specific verse in the Bible, and that’s because it’s one of the unifying themes of the whole book. From the story of creation, the rise and fall of the Roman empire, the life and death of Jesus, to the magnificent battles in Revelation, we can see that the power of God is something we can even barely comprehend.
Every promise comes to pass, every seed He plants comes into fruition. And since there are so many examples and stories showing us that God is greater than the highs and lows, it’s why the symbol has become so popular.
Seeing the symbol G>∧∨ encapsulates the truth that no matter what, God’s way is perfect, and His plans will always take place above all. It’s popular because it is true in all of our lives. That’s why people don’t hesitate to wear it emblazoned on their shirts, or as a God is Greater than the Highs and Lows hat.
You can even see attached to their phones a God is Greater than the Highs and Lows case, because it is good to have an arrow pointed at the truth every day, and we know no one leaves their phones behind!
Behind the Meaning of God is Greater than the Highs and Lows
Why does this symbol ring so true for so many people? What does “God is greater than the highs and lows” mean?
There are a lot of stories in scripture that show this as true. You’ve read about Job, a man who had everything and everyone literally taken away from him, and yet he continued to hold on to the promise that God is greater than the highs and lows of his life, even if it meant losing everything.
In the end, God blessed him even more for his faithfulness. Everything and everyone he lost, he regained so much more in return. Job is probably this symbol in human form.
Let’s not forget Daniel in the lion’s den, whose heart didn’t falter when he was surrounded by some of God’s fiercest creations. He knew that God controlled everything on earth, including seemingly untamable lions. And yet as the night passed and the sun rose the next day, they found him unscathed, unafraid, and very much alive in that cave.
Once again God has proven that He is greater than the highs and lows that the world may throw our way. Not even the hungriest lions could overcome that promise.
Or David, who, before he became king, found himself hiding in a cave, running for his life from a mad man who wanted him dead. He knew that God was bigger than threats to his life, and like all of these other stories, He was proven true. Even when he became king, the hardships and temptations didn’t end. His humanity and flawed nature sometimes overcame his better senses, and yet God used his situation to expand His kingdom.
In David’s humanness, the sovereignty of God was seen. And from that line came our savior, the messiah, Jesus Christ. Even in the dust, God can create something beautiful. He can make dry bones dance in worship. God is magnificent and always greater than the highest highs and the lowest lows.
We know that life is going to throw more than a few curveballs our way. We’re going to be experiencing one storm after another, and perhaps nothing in life will ever be certain. Except for this symbol – this one we can know with full certainty is truer than true.
That no matter what we are facing, whatever mountains we find before us, we can look at this symbol and be reminded that in the morning there will be joy and dancing. With each new day comes a renewed promise that God is greater than all of our highs and lows.
It’s been said that in life, we are either entering a storm, in the midst of a storm or emerging from one. And while this may be true, and will remain true to the end of our days, it also means that there are a million different ways God will show His true power in our lives.
